VISUAL ART
& Environment
IMG_6600.jpg

I was always enthusiastic about arts and crafts.

I continuously experiment with different kinds of artistic medium.

During summer vacations, I travel back to my home country South Korea and draw posters about the environment.

I hope to continue to raise awareness about the environment through my art work.

Environmental Posters

These are some of the artwork I created for environmental awareness.

An Abandoned Doll

Paper, watercolor, color pencil
54.5 x 39.4cm

Recently, I read that there were over 20 plastic dolls on the beach of Texas. These plastic dolls were thrown away as trash, and they would eventually flow into the ocean.

Looking at the photos of abandoned dolls on the beach made it all the more eerie. The dolls at collected sand, dead fish, and seaweed in their eyes, nostrils, and mouths.

This made me realize how much trash was flowing into the ocean.

The dolls that were discovered on the shore would be cleaned up and resold to fund environmental causes.

I wanted to raise awareness to this activity, and created this poster as a result.

How to Help Wild Animals in the Sweltering Heat
4WD_7813-1.JPG

Paper, color pencil, pencil, acrylic
54.5 x 39.4cm

Sweltering heat is now a worldwide problem.

To beat the heat, I can turn on the air conditioner, drink something cool, or stand in front of a fan. But how can animals cool themselves from the heat?

I learned that we can help by putting a small bowl of water on our balconies to help wild animals.

This is one way I helped wild animals myself, so I documented my experience into an artwork.

It Becomes Garbage
The Moment I Need It

As an effort to reduce plastic waste, customers in Korea no longer use plastic cups in store. Some coffee shops only offer paper straws instead of plastic straws.

I was touched by the effort Koreans have put into reducing plastic, and I wanted to bring awareness by creating a poster.

I drew the hand that touches the cup in black and white to emphasize that the plastic becomes waste the moment we use it.

My Shoes

Pink styrofoam, acrylic, gesso
W:6.3cm H:17cm D:4.2cm

"My Shoes" is a form of self-portrait that symbolizes the experiences I have had in the past.

The shoes represents the first step I took when I visited the beach to witness the pollution.

It also represents the cultural gap I experienced when I first came to the US.

Lastly, it represents the sense of belonging that grew on me after making new friends and adjusting to a new school.

My Posters On Campus

My "Let's Recycle" and "Save The Earth" posters were exhibited on walls and doors on campus for students to see.

I hope I was able to remind others to recycle and be environmentally aware through these posters.
